Anyone who is interested in mind maps will probably also be interested in this free** tool. If you haven’t heard of or used a mind map then you should give it a go, especially if you do any kind of project work, or are interested in organising anything complex.
Up till now I had used the excellent Mindmeister tool but it is only free for up to 3 maps and I cant really justify spending any money on it at this point; but today I discovered Popplet, which is a free online tool, and seemed to do everything I expected it to do without me pulling any hair out.
**Update:I discovered in the course of using Popplet that it too is limited – to 5 popplets, with more being available to premium members.
On first impressions Popplet seems a bit richer than something like Mindmeister, and it allows you to do a bit more, or at least a bit more without fighting with the UI in any way. It’s very easy to add images or drawings etc. The only negative think I noticed was that it doesn’t seem to have keyboard shortcuts for creating new Popplets, which is a big plus with Mindmeister if you have lots of short ideas firing one after the other and you don’t want to have to keep moving between keyboard and mouse for every idea; but other than that I found it better than Mindmeister in the short time I used it. Popplet is designed for the iPhone and iPad but it seems to work fine on a regular brower.
